Case Studies: Realizing Achievement with Students of All Ages

  • A medical student did not understand his uneven academic performance.  Due to his comprehensive and thorough method of assessment, Dr. Hess found a learning disorder that had subtly affected the student’s memory, visualization, and math throughout his education.  Dr. Hess’s diagnosis led to accommodations, such as extended time, extra breaks, and separate location for medical school exams.  With these accommodations and improved study techniques, the student was able to complete the requirements of the medical school curriculum and he is now a practicing physician.

  • A bright but disorganized fifteen-year–old girl lacked study skills.  This situation led to failing grades when she transferred to a more demanding high school.  Dr. Hess worked twice weekly with this student, addressing time management, concentration during reading, and test-taking strategies.  After six months, her grades greatly improved.  She gained a new sense of mastery about school.

  • An eight-year-old was performing below his school’s standards in writing.  His parents requested testing to identify the problem’s source.  Dr. Hess discovered the child’s need for specialized tutoring that acknowledged the nature of his challenge.  Dr. Hess scheduled meetings with the child’s parents, teachers, and tutor to help them implement new strategies.  The student’s writing skills improved.
